Castletown
Heritage is
an independent
charity
- we
are not
connected
to Manx
National
Heritage,
the Castletown
Commissioners
or any
other
public
body.
We are
affiliated
to the Civic Trust,
an umbrella
organisation
for local
amenity
societies
throughout
the British
Isles,
and we
are a
member
of the
AIHG
(the
Association
of Island
Heritage
Groups)
which
links
similar
societies
in other
parts
of the
Island. |

Our
main
aim is
to preserve
Castletown
as a
living,
working
town.
That
means
we don't
want
to fossilise
it or
preserve
it in
aspic
- people
are as
important
as buildings,
so we
want
to keep
Castletown
alive,
as a
place
where
people
live,
work
and shop
- not
just
as a
dormitory
town
or a
tourist
attraction. |
|
|
But
at the
same time
Castletown
needs to
do what
towns of
its importance
do in England
and elsewhere
in the
world,
and that
is to maintain
its visual
attractiveness
and historic
value by
preserving
what is
best of
its historic
townscape
and enhancing
it with
good new
building.
If our
buildings
have survived
for two,
three,
four hundred
years,
we as a
community
should
cherish
them, not
demolish
them for
short-term
profit. |

Our
members
are of
all ages
and come
from all
backgrounds
- we have
some members
whose families
can be
traced
back in
Castletown
for centuries,
and others
who have
come to
the British
Isles only
recently.
We run events and
activities
to which
members
and others
can come,
but a lot
of our
work is
behind
the scenes,
looking
every week,
for example,
at all
planning
applications
lodged
for Castletown,
and commenting
positively
or negatively
on many. |
